Holiday Madness!

Chances are, if you are reading these monthly notes from Power Ministries, you have an idea of the true meanings behind such Holidays as Christmas and Easter.  Those of us that do can find it hard to comprehend that there are people out there that have never been taught the meanings beyond Santa and the Easter Bunny.  We find this to be true with many of our Campers.

“Expedition: Heaven” , our theme for the 2007 New Purpose Retreat season, dives into the roots of very first Christmas and Easter.  Why did they happen?  What should that mean to us?

Each session starts off with a Christmas celebration where the campers see a reenactment of the very first Christmas and even get to work on creating a gift.  At their first campfire of the session, they wrap up the day with some Christmas carols.

The list of all the miracles, sermons and activities in the life of Jesus Christ are vast, and can hardly be contained in the lessons of one day of a retreat.  So, we touch on them briefly to emphasize what a great and powerful God we serve. 

And, what would a New Purpose Retreat session be with out the annual Retreat Olympics???  Our campers love to race with each other and show their “stuff” during the different relays, races and contests.  There’s something for everyone...and everyone’s a winner in our books!

During the evening sessions on this second day, we discuss the Last Supper, and how important this time was between Jesus and his disciples.  We close this time by sharing a similar time of communion amongst the campers and retreat staff.  The evening is closed at campfire on a serious note, a depiction of the crucifixion.

Closing day is a bittersweet time.  Campers are always sad knowing that they have to leave camp and all the friends they have made.  So, during Expedition: Heaven, we end with a Celebration!  This is the day that we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection!!!  We try to fill this day with excitement so that the campers will carry the thrill with them to their friends and family upon leaving.  We send them home not only with a certificate celebrating their participation, but also with tools to share their findings on this Expedition!
